YDL-Michigan Avenue teen library users have their say . . .
“The library’s just a great place to hang out. I look up stuff for classes or just go to find a real good book to read.”
Have you noticed that, during tough economic times, libraries are in great demand? It’s a national trend and the Ypsilanti District Library is a perfect example. We’ve experienced an incredible 10% increase in usage this year. I’m proud that we can support Ypsilanti residents with free internet access for job search resources and resume writing tools, as well as offer services to help families survive in lean times. In these challenging times, it’s more important than ever to also support our teen library users. YDL-Michigan Avenue, one of YDL’s busiest service locations, has successfully attracted many area teens to its building. Unfortunately, teens currently must share space with children in the library’s lower level. We lack an adequate amount of seating and collection space, as well as computers to meet the needs of our growing teen audience. We need your financial support to implement one of our most important strategic goals, namely to create a teen-friendly space to encourage teens to use their library. Our goal of $25,000 will fund the renovation of YDL-Michigan Avenue’s lower level to create a “Teen Zone” as illustrated on the enclosed conceptual drawing. This dynamic space will reflect the teens’ interactive nature and learning styles with displays, seating, computers, and collections that appeal to their taste. This space will belong to them!
In the proposed “Teen Zone,” teens will be able to work on career planning or college applications, do their homework, participate in program planning with other Teen Advisory Group (TAG) members, or just have fun!
The new “Teen Zone” will benefit both teens and our community by providing a safe and attractive after-school option. Your gift will be an investment in our community’s future. Can YDL’s teens count on your support? Please drop off your contribution at any YDL Public Service Desk. Remember, all gifts are tax deductible and qualify for the Michigan Tax Credit.
