Summer Reading at the Ypsilanti District Library

Summer Reading at the Ypsilanti District Library

2006: Shakes-perience

Shakespeare
After much ado, the stage is set for our summer reading programs, which are inspired by no less a playwright than Shakespeare. We will explore the Bard and his modern-day influences in theatre, poetry, art, and song.

Youth, teens and adults are invited to sign up for age-specific reading programs beginning Thursday, June 1. Stop by either YDL-Whittaker Road or YDL-Michigan Avenue or call the contact numbers listed below. Then join us on Saturday, June 10 for kick-off activities for all age groups at both locations. The merriment continues through Saturday, August 19, when a wrap-up celebration brings down the curtain on what we hope will be record-breaking reading performances. Read on to discover all that summer reading has in store!

Youth: “To Read . . . Or Be Read To”

That is the question for our youngest library patrons this summer. Young people 12 and under are invited to set a reading goal of 900 minutes, and can earn incentive prizes at 300 and 600 minutes. The grand prize for finishers will be a new book, thanks to the generosity of our Friends of YDL. Call our youth departments for more information: 482-4110 ext. 1340 (Whittaker) or ext. 1390 (Michigan Avenue).

Teens: “Will Power”

Teens 12-17 are encouraged to read eight books this summer on any topic. Just for signing up, teens will receive a $5 YDL coupon and a Hungry Howie’s coupon. The final prize will be a free book. At the end of summer, finishers will also be included in a raffle for more prizes from area establishments. Teens are invited to participate in special teen-planned programs like Shakurspeare: Hip Hop Literary Connections, a concert by The High Strung, and the Teen Advisory Group. To learn more about “Will Power,” call 482-4110 ext. 1348 (Whittaker) or ext. 1390 (Michigan Avenue).

Adults: “Reading. . . As You Like It”

YDL’s adult readers can discover the mysteries of herbal medicines, see action theatre troupe The Ring of Steel brandish Elizabethan-style weapons, and become enchanted by the Celtic music of Tartanic. Those who enroll in the summer reading program set a goal of completing eight books in any format. For more details and registration, call 482-4110 ext. 1377 (Whittaker) or ext. 1385 (Michigan Avenue).
