Ypsilanti’s Place in the Story of the Underground Railroad

Learn about Ypsilanti’s important place in the history of the Underground Railroad. Many of Ypsilanti’s original black families were deeply involved in the nineteenth century’s most important black freedom struggle, whether from rural, free black communities in the Ohio River Valley, as passengers on the Underground Railroad, or as exiles to Canada or soldiers in the Civil War. Historian Matt Siegfried’s presentation will explore the people, debates, and events of the period, and give us insight into the unique experiences shared by the cross-border community living in Canada and southeast Michigan.
