Workers Respond to Motivational Messages, from the Five Dollar Day to Dilbert

Employers have saturated the workplace with motivational messages throughout the twentieth century, from early in the century at the Ford Motor Company, to experiments in worker productivity in the 1920s, to the appeal of patriotism in World War II, to the optimistic post war era. This lecture will give examples of motivational messages throughout the period as well as ways workers responded, both with criticism and humor.
