Oct 5: Cracking the codes: The System of Racial Inequality:By sentiment, most Americans find racism unacceptable, but our common understanding is stuck in 1963-racism today survives in a more pervasive and insidious “undercover” mode of operation; this film challenges us to understand the costs of systematic racial inequity and to build a world that works for everyone.

Nov 2: Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible:With its focus on overcoming issues of internalized and unconscious racism, this film encourages conversations about race and racism which allow movement toward making a solid commitment to ending racial injustice, and supports a new dynamic of learning and healing between racial groups.

Between the Civil War and around 1920, Ypsilanti was home to a larger proportion of African-Americans than any other city in Michigan. What was it like for a large black community in the north in the years after the Civil War? For generations this community, steeped in the struggle against slavery, played a leading role in the entire region’s black life. We will take a hard and serious look at the reality of racism in the city and how Ypsilanti’s confident and well-organized black community responded. Learn about the community’s social and political life as we place Ypsilanti in the national context of Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow with historian Matt Siegfried.

You Can Take It with You as You Age

Trouble sleeping is common in older adults. Frequent wake-ups at night, waking up too early, and sleep that feels nonrestorative can make for dreary nights and days. Her book, The Savvy Insomniac: A Personal Journey through Science to Better Sleep, placed as a finalist in the 2014 National Indie Excellence Awards contest and will be available for purchase after the program.

The Therapeutic Uses of Comics in Health Care

MK Czerwiec, RN, MA will introduce the field of Graphic Medicine, describing the many surprising ways comics are beneficial in health care. She will present several examples of graphic pathographies (illness narratives in comic form) and explain why they are useful in the education of both patients and health care professionals. She will also discuss the role that making comics can have in health care. This program is made possible by a grant from the Will Eisner Family Foundation and Ypsilanti District Library, which was awarded the 2014 Will Eisner Growth Grant. MK Czerwiec comes to us from Columbia College Chicago and the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine.

To register for the event, please visit St. Joe's website.
