WI-FI FAQ

Wireless Internet Frequently Asked Questions

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi access uses radio frequency signals to exchange information between your personal computer or wireless device and the Internet. No cables are required.

Why Wi-Fi?

Wireless allows library users to bring their own laptop computers to the library to get Internet access.

Does the Ypsilanti District Library have a Wi-Fi Access Policy?

Yes, the Library Board of Trustees approved a Wi-Fi Access Policy on January 26, 2006. A copy of this policy can be found at any public service desk of YDL.

How can I use wireless Internet at the Library?

Your laptop or other wireless device will need a Wi-Fi compatible network card. YDL does not provide wireless network cards.
You will also need your YDL library card number. If you do not have a YDL library card, you may obtain a guest card number from the Reference Desk.
Bring your laptop or wireless device to the library and turn it on.
Your computer or device should automatically recognize the YDL wireless network.
Click on your web browser program to get to our log-in screen.
Enter your YDL library card number (located on the back of the card near the barcode) or the guest card number.
You now have Internet access!

Will I need any special settings or passwords to connect?

You will be automatically redirected to a login page when opening your web browser. At the login page you will enter your library card number (located on the back of the card near the barcode) or guest card number. Following successful login you will be automatically directed to the YDL website (www.ypsilibrary.org) and may begin browsing the web.

Since I’m using my own equipment, do the general YDL rules about computer use still apply to me?

Wireless users must agree to abide by the Ypsilanti District Library’s Internet Public Access Policy. A copy of this policy is available at any public service desk at YDL and on the YDL website (www.ypsilibrary.org).

Can I borrow headphones for wireless use?

Yes, headphones are available at the Reference Desk for in-house use only.

Is my information safe while using wireless? What about virus protection and security?

YDL is not responsible for damages incurred for incorrect, insufficient, or incomplete security settings or lack of adequate or up-to-date virus protection. Wireless users assume all risks in this regard.

Is wireless available at both locations of YDL?
