Marching Forward: Congressman John Lewis

We are disappointed to announce that Congressman Lewis will not be traveling to Michigan for this event. Events related to his talk on September 21 have been cancelled.

John Lewis' appearance has been rescheduled for November 27 at 7pm at Ann Arbor's Hill Auditorium.

Below is the statement from the event organizers at the University of Michigan:

Due to an unexpected meeting of the Black Congressional Caucus the Penny Stamps Speaker Series event featuring Congressman John Lewis with Nate Powell and Andrew Aydin has been cancelled. This event was originally scheduled for Thursday, September 21 at 5:10 pm in the Michigan Theater. There may be a reschedule for the 2017-2018 academic year; details will be announced soon.

On the cancelled event, Chrisstina Hamilton, Stamps Speaker Series Director, stated: “We have deep respect for the immediate criticality of John Lewis’ leadership in congress. While we’re saddened by the lost opportunity to connect and learn from Lewis’ campus visit, we understand that his service to the nation is paramount. We’re thankful to John Lewis’ office for working with us on a possible reschedule and will announce details as soon as they come together.”

About John Lewis

Congressman John Lewis is one of the most respected civil rights leaders today.  Born in Alabama in 1940 and inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr., Lewis joined the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement, became a Freedom Rider, spoke at 1963's March on Washington, and led the demonstration that became known as "Bloody Sunday." He was elected to Congress in 1986 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.

About the March graphic novel series

In the March series, Rep. Lewis shares his memories of the Civil Rights Movement with a younger generation. The series is co-authored by Nate Powell and Andrew Aydin. March has won numerous awards, including the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, the Coretta Scott King Award, and is the first graphic novel to ever win the National Book Award. Speaking about the importance of books in his life, Lewis recalls an elementary school teacher who told him, “’Read, my child, read’, and I tried to read everything. "I love books.”
