Really, there IS useful tax information on irs.gov and michigan.gov
Taxes-a word we all hear a lot this time of year. Benjamin Franklin wrote in a 1789 letter that “Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” I’d rather not talk about death, so let’s make this about taxes.
The 2018 tax season runs from January 29-April 17, 2018. If you’re running a business, you’re busy, we get that. No worries! You’ll find a wealth of information online, from the forms you need to answers to your questions. Hit the IRS and State of Michigan websites before you talk to a tax preparer or tackle the job yourself.
What will I find on the IRS website?
Did you know that the IRS has a section on their website dedicated to business taxes? Take a look at the IRS Tax Information for Businesses page https://www.irs.gov/businesses. It’s chock-full of useful information and those pesky forms too. Here’s a sampling of a few useful sections-

- Small Business Forms and Publications
And gulp!-you’ll even find Your Guide to an IRS Small Business Audit, featuring videos that that walk you through a small business tax audit. Hopefully you’ll never need to use THAT one….
What will I find on the State of Michigan Website?
Not to be outdone, the State of Michigan also has a Business Taxes section http://www.michigan.gov/taxes/0,4676,7-238-43519—,00.html on their website. You’ll find similar information there on topics such as-
- Business tax forms and instructions
- Business tax types
- Tax information for nonprofits
And-you guessed it- the useful but dreaded information on tax audits.
