Have you been following our Summer Learning pages and noticed that each one has an Ypsi Writes prompt? Wondering who is behind the fun activities? Find out!

Sonia is a Master’s student studying interdisciplinary arts and creative writing at Eastern Michigan University. She has worked in many jobs, from shoe sales, to outdoor expedition leader, to Human Resources, to writing center GA. She loves the way writing prompts teach us about ourselves and reveal new ways of making sense of our stories. She loves to go for long runs and eat lemon ice to cool down.

Kelsey is a Master’s student studying Communication Sciences and Disorders at Eastern Michigan University.  He is a former graduate assistant at EMU’s writing center and in EMU’s Special Education department.  He also served as an undergraduate tutor at Saginaw Valley State University’s writing center, assisting in community tutoring in downtown Saginaw and Bay City.  He loves dystopian science fiction and bold coffee.

Esther is a Summer Programs Intern with 826michigan and she is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan. She loves reading books outside on a towel, or biking around the neighborhood even when it’s really hot outside.

Allison is a Summer Programs Intern with 826michigan, as well as an undergraduate student at Ohio Northern University. She studies creative and professional writing, and loves exploring different forms of art and storytelling.

Catherine is Education Director with 826michigan where she has supported writing programs for young people for more than ten years. She is also a doctoral student in education at Eastern Michigan University. Her favorite thing to write about in the summer is ice cream.

826michigan is part of 826 National, the largest youth writing network in the country, with chapters in nine U.S. cities, including the one in the Ypsi/Ann Arbor/Detroit region. These nine chapters serve 40,000 students each year, thanks to the support of almost 5,000 volunteers.

Each chapter has an imaginative storefront. You’ll find the local chapter in downtown Ann Arbor behind the robot supply storefront, but they are active in the Ypsi and Detroit communities as well, providing students access to high-quality, engaging, and free writing, tutoring, and publishing programs.

Teachers and parents, if you’re looking for more writing prompt ideas, there are hundreds of free lesson plans, writing prompts, and selections of sample student writing you can find at 826digital. Create a login the first time to gain access. Everything is free; donations are optional!
