Our Commitment to a Bird-Friendly New Branch
Superior Township is widely known and respected for preserving greenspace and caring for the environment. The community has indicated a specific interest in sustainability. As YDL is committed to protecting the environment and its wildlife, we have pledged to make the new library bird-friendly.

The US Fish & Wildlife Service states that nearly one billion birds die each year in the United States due to collisions with windows, and research shows that 54-76 percent of window collisions are fatal. An effective way to minimize bird strikes is the installation of bird-friendly glass. YDL has thoroughly investigated alternatives (stickers, overlay film, netting, etc.), but they do not have the longevity or cost effectiveness, and are not as aesthetically pleasing as bird-friendly glass.

What Is Bird-Friendly Glass?

This special glass has dots etched into the surface every few inches. It interrupts the reflections birds see on windows and alerts them to the fact there is a surface present. It does not detract from the view humans have out the window. The library’s architect has specified Guardian Glass Bird1st Etch 17. The cost to install this glass over “regular” glass is $12,000.

As a public library, we have constant opportunities for teachable moments. We will incorporate the message about the importance of caring for wildlife and the environment when we give tours of the facility, and use the bird-friendly glass as an educational touchpoint with youth.
