It’s June, and that means YDL is ready to start the 2022 Summer Challenge. From June 10 until August 28, log your activities in your Summer Challenge account to earn digital badges and prizes. If you haven’t taken the Summer Challenge before or need to reactivate your account, you can do so here.

Earn digital badges by reading or listening to books, attending library events, or completing fun challenges that help you explore the library and the community. All ages are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Below, learn how to earn badges and discover the prizes you can earn by participating in the Summer Challenge.

Here are a few things you can do at the library to earn a Learn badges at events this summer!

Have a blast at the kickoff running through the blow-up obstacle course, creating spiral art, making humungous bubbles, and playing giant Jenga, Connect 4, and Boggle. Paddington the Library Dog will be making an appearance from 2-3pm.

Free meals for kids 0-18 years old will be provided by Food Gatherers. This event is located on the Library Plaza of YDL-Michigan.

Other Ways to Earn Summer Challenge Badges

In addition to attending YDL events, you can read (or listen to) books and explore library services and the community to earn badges.


Set your own goal for how much you want to read and track your progress online. Everyone who reads or listens to at least six books earns a prize.

It’s best to read a bit each day to keep your brain in shape for school to start back in the fall. Can you keep up a reading streak and read 5 out 7 days each week? If you do, you’ll earn extra badges!

Little Ones Challenges

We have a special list of challenges you can do with younger learners to get ready for kindergarten. You can download it here.


Take challenges created by library staff that encourage you to get to know library services and the Ypsilanti community. Each challenge earns a different digital badge. You can complete the Summer Challenge bingo, discover interesting avian species on the birding geocache hunt, explore Fairy doors around Ypsilanti using the map below, and complete many more activities for more badges.

Types of Prizes

Earn prizes even when you sign up! Everyone who reads at least six books gets a prize, and kids and teens who complete six explore challenges also get a prize. Every badge you earn is worth a chance at winning the grand prize of your choice. And there are weekly prize! See details below. 

Sign Up

When you sign up for the Summer Challenge or reactivate your account, you will receive a prize:

  • 0-2: TALK Swag and a bookmark
  • 3-18: Pool pass to Rutherford Pool
  • Adults: YDL sticky note pad
Read 6 Books

Read or listen to 6 books to earn your prize:

  • 0-12: A book and a free Aubree’s Meal
  • 13-18: A book and $5 off at Aubree’s
  • Adults: YDL Bamboo Utensils
Grand Prizes

The more badges you complete, the greater chance you have at winning the grand prize of your choice.


Complete 6 Explore Challenges

Youth who complete 6 Explore Challenges will receive:

  • 0-13: Free Taco Bell taco or burrito
  • 14-18: $10 off Domino’s Pizza
Weekly Drawings

Youth who earn at least 1 badge in a week are entered to win a weekly prize.
