Freedom Songs

#FATWTS - Activity 10

Background

In the PBS-produced “American Experience” film Soundtrack for a Revolution, the “story of the American Civil Rights movement is told through its powerful music—the freedom songs that protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, in police wagons, and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality.” Freedom Songs, with their direct and repetitive choruses, were an efficient way to communicate the message of Civil Rights.

ACTIVITY: Write Your Freedom Song

Download the recording or view the documentary Soundtrack for a Revolution on Hoopla. Write the chorus to your own Freedom Song. What does the nation need to hear today? You can download a song sheet template for extra inspiration, and upload your work using the form below!
