Oakland Community College Professor Dennis Fiems traces the attitudes and treatment of mental health problems from ancient times through the Enlightenment, when treatment improved to a degree. He will also discuss the development of humane treatment programs begun in the 1700s and 1800s, with a focus on reform in the United States, concluding with a brief look at the deinstitutionalization movement.
