Staff Internet Usage Policy
Approved: 07/24/2003

Purpose
This policy sets forth guidelines for the use of the Library’s access to the Internet. It is intended to protect the Ypsilanti District Library from liability and to assure that there is no misuse of Library resources.

Scope
All employees of the Ypsilanti District Library including temporary and part-time staff are subject to this policy.

General Principles
The Library provides access to the Internet to support the mission of the Library; no use of the Internet should conflict with the mission or core values of the library, or with applicable laws and regulations. Personal use of the Internet must be limited to break or lunch times. Each staff member is personally responsible to ensure that these guidelines are followed.

The Library Director may designate authorized personnel to monitor usage of the Internet by staff members, including reviewing a list of sites accessed by an individual. No individual should have any expectation of privacy in terms of his/her use of the Internet.

The Library’s connection to the Internet may not be used for any of the following activities:

  • To access, create, transmit, print or download material that is derogatory, defamatory, obscene, or offensive, such as slurs, epithets, or anything that may be construed as harassment or disparagement based on race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, or religious or political beliefs.
  • To access, send, receive, or solicit sexually-oriented messages or images.
  • To download or disseminate copyrighted material on the Internet, since this is an infringement of copyright law. Permission to copy the material must be obtained from the publisher
  • To download software from the Internet unless expressly approved by the Technology Manager.
  • To transmit personal comments or statements or to post information to newsgroups that may be mistaken as the position of the Library.
  • To disclose confidential information through the use of Internet e-mail, news groups or Usenet.
  • To send or participate in chain letters, pyramid schemes or other illegal activities.
  • To solicit or proselytize others for commercial purposes, causes, outside organizations, or other non-job-related purposes.

If you have questions regarding any of the policy guidelines listed above, please contact your supervisor, or the Library Director.
