Volunteer at YDL

Volunteers at the Ypsilanti District Library provide an important service by assisting the library in its mission.

Volunteers are at the heart of what makes Ypsilanti District Library a vibrant community space. Whether you’re looking to give back, build skills, or just spend more time at your library, we’d love to have you.

We have volunteer opportunities across all three branches — from helping at events and programs to supporting behind-the-scenes library operations. Whatever your interests or availability, we’ll work with you to find a good fit.

Note: We are not accepting volunteers through any court-ordered programs at this time.

What Volunteers Do at YDL

Volunteer opportunities at YDL include welcoming patrons and helping at events, shelving and organizing library collections, supporting programs and seasonal activities, assisting with behind-the-scenes tasks like craft prep and office support, helping keep our spaces clean and welcoming, tending our community gardens and outdoor spaces, and special projects as they come up.

We want to find an assignment that works for you, your schedule, your interests, and your skills.

How to Apply

Download and complete our Volunteer Application and submit it by email or in person at any YDL branch:

Ypsilanti District Library
5577 Whittaker Road Ypsilanti, MI 48197
[email protected]

Once we receive your application, our Volunteer Coordinator will reach out to set up a brief screening conversation. From there, we’ll match you with an assignment that fits your availability and interests, connect you with the relevant staff, and get you oriented before your first shift.

You’ll have a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator as your go-to contact throughout your time with us — for questions, scheduling changes, or anything else that comes up.

Friends of the Ypsilanti District Library

The Friends of the Ypsilanti District Library is an independent nonprofit that supports the library. Their volunteer program is separate from the library’s. To get involved, contact the Friends directly.

The Friends of YDL are always looking for volunteers. Opportunities include sorting donated books on Tuesday mornings, working weekend book sales, and taking shifts in the Friends Shop. Learn more.

Teen Volunteers

YDL is proud to support students looking to give back to their community and earn volunteer hours. We offer variety of ways for teens to apply to earn hours–from being part of our youth leadership team to helping at programs when you have extra time. Choose what fits your schedule and interests. You’ll earn volunteer hours, build your resume, and earn letters of recommendation, too.
