If you’ve visited the Whittaker Road library, you may have noticed the office beside the checkout desk. Housed in that office is one of YDL’s strongest partners, Washtenaw Literacy.

Washtenaw Literacy is the area’s go-to organization for adults who want to increase their reading and writing skills. They rely on a network of highly trained volunteer tutors. Tutors are paired with learners to help the learner achieve their long-term literacy goals. In addition to these tutor-learner pairings, Washtenaw Literacy offers the following:

  • Drop-in English as a Second Language tutoring
  • Computer lab at the Grace Fellowship House of Solutions Community Opportunity Center
  • Professional development for local employers

So why is literacy so important?

  • Parents who read have children who read. A parent’s literacy level is the single largest predictor of a child’s literacy level.
  • Increased levels of literacy help people achieve better health, better jobs, and higher incomes

If you or someone you know needs help improving their English-speaking or reading or writing skills, call Washtenaw Literacy at 734-337-3338 or email info@washtenawliteracy.org.
