Get ready for Smeet Fest, a celebration of Ypsilanti’s very own resident cryptid, the Smeet Frog! Throughout September, YDL is recognizing this beloved  creature with a series of engaging programs at YDL-Michigan designed to bring the community together.

For those unfamiliar with our local folklore, the Smeet Frog is a small flying frog, covered in fur. There have been Smeet sightings in Frog Island Park since the 1990’s.

Smeet Fest will blend local folklore with community creativity, offering something for residents of all ages. Prepare to embrace Ypsilanti’s most famous (and mysterious) resident.

PARTICIPATE IN SMEET FEST AT THE DOWNTOWN BRANCH

Throughout September, participate in Smeet-themed activities and enjoy great Smeet swag and other creations.

Illustration Contest

Artists of all skill levels can submit original interpretations of the Smeet Frog, with separate categories for youth and adult participants. With so few existing illustrations of our cryptid, this contest is a chance for creative community members to help define how we envision this mysterious creature. Winners will be selected by community vote, with winning designs featured on handcrafted bookmarks. You can submit your entry online or ask for an entry form at the YDL-Michigan branch.

Youth Storytelling Project

We’ll provide guided journal prompts to help young writers create their own Smeet Frog stories, adding new chapters to Ypsilanti’s growing Smeet lore.

Smeet Dreams are Made of Zines
In September, the library’s popular Zine Club will focus on Smeet-themed creations.
