All YDL locations have wireless internet available at no charge. Most devices will log in to the WiFi automatically. Simply open a web browser and click “accept the terms and conditions” to be connected to the internet.

WiFi Troubleshooting

Detailed information about configuration methods for Windows and Mac laptops is available at the YDL reference desk. Below are some steps to take for troubleshooting connectivity issues with your Windows or Macintosh laptop computers after correctly configuring your TCP/IP settings.

System Requirements

  • You will need a device with build-in WiFi capability or a WiFi-compliant 802.11b/g Ethernet device installed in your laptop.
  • A web browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, or Google Chrome.
  • TCP/IP set to obtain IP address automatically from a server.

Windows NT, XP, and Windows 2000 / Vista / Windows 7 Systems

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Type: cmd in the Start Search text box.
  3. Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter to run Command Prompt as Administrator. Allow elevation request
  4. Type: netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and hit Enter
  5. Restart the computer (for best result)
  6. Go to Start, then Run and type: CMD. Click OK. A command prompt window will appear.
  7. Type the following in the command prompt window:
    Ipconfig /all (This will display full configuration information)*
    Ipconfig /release (Releases current IP address)
    Ipconfig /renew (Renews the IP address)*

* Denotes correct IP information. Will be in the format of (10.0.201.X) and netmask of (255.255.255.0) DNS will be (10.0.201.240).

Mac Powerbooks or iBooks

Your laptop must have the recent versions of MacTCP Control Panel installed. This control panel comes with system software and should be pre-installed.

If you have other MacTCP configurations that you would like to save, MacTCP Switcher is a useful utility for storing several set-ups.

To configure your MacTCP, choose “Connect via Ethernet.”

Mac OS X

Either restart your computer or follow these steps to force reconfiguration of IP settings

  1. Close any open Internet applications (such as Web browsers and email). Be sure to save any changes to any open documents.
  2. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  3. Choose Network from the View menu.
  4. Choose Active Network Ports from the Show menu.
  5. Deselect the “on” checkbox for port you use to connect to the Internet (such as Built-in Ethernet or AirPort).
  6. Click Apply Now.
  7. Reselect the checkbox for the port.
  8. Click Apply Now.
  9. Open a Web browser, and attempt to connect.

Mac OS 9

Either restart your computer or follow these steps to force reconfiguration of IP settings

  1. Close any open Internet applications (such as Web browsers and email). Be sure to save any changes to any open documents.
  2. Open the TCP/IP control panel.
  3. Choose User Mode from the Edit menu.
  4. Click the radio button for Advanced.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Options.
  7. Click the radio button for Inactive.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close the TCP/IP control panel.
  10. When prompted, click Save.
  11. Open the TCP/IP control panel.
  12. When prompted, click Yes.
  13. Close the TCP/IP control panel.
  14. Open a Web browser, and attempt to connect.
