Low Vision Services

Enjoy everything the library has to offer! YDL has several options to make reading accessible to those with limited vision.

Desktop Magnifiers

YDL-Whittaker Road and YDL-Michigan Avenue have Topaz EZ viewers which magnify reading materials for library patrons. These viewers are located on the first floor of each library, near the popular reading room at YDL-Michigan and near the large print materials at YDL-Whittaker.

Magnifiers for checkout

The library offers magnifiers in various styles and strengths for our patrons to check out. View the collection here.

Large Print books

YDL offers over 9,000 books in large print type. Nonfiction and fiction titles are available, including new releases.

Adaptive Computer Stations

Adaptive computer stations are equipped with JAWS and ZoomText software to ensure blind and visually impaired patrons can take full advantage of our computers, including browsing the web and using common software and applications. Computer stations are available at YDL-Whittaker and YDL-Michigan.

Washtenaw Library for the Blind

Patrons may also qualify for services from the Washtenaw County Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled, housed at the Ann Arbor District Library. This specialized library loans books, magazines, and videos in alternative formats, including audio books on cartridge or for download, large print, braille books and magazines, and descriptive video. Materials from the library and a talking book machine may be mailed to your home at no cost.

WLBPD services are available to people of all ages who are unable to read or use standard printed materials as a result of temporary or permanent visual or physical limitations. If you are unable to read standard type print, unable to hold a book in your hands, or if you have dyslexia, you may be eligible.
