What is a Maker Cart?

YDL-Whittaker has added a new afterschool activity for kids. It is called the Maker Cart. The Maker Cart is available from 2pm to 4pm on 2nd and 4th Mondays, 1st and 3rd Wednesdays, and 2nd Saturdays. That is five days of making each month.

What is Making?

YDL thinks of “making” as an opportunity for kids to create at their own pace. Anyone using the maker cart is encouraged to explore the possibilities of different materials. There is no right or wrong way to create. Making with the Maker Cart is about the process.

What are we Making?

The maker cart has a different theme each month. It kicked off in January with “Wood you like to make something?”. Miss Marlena stocked the Maker Cart with wood blocks and pieces. Kids were instructed on how to properly use hot glue, washi tape, and even a drill. Everyone got to take home a one of a kind project. Making does not have to be expensive. Most of the materials for this month were rescued from the recycling bin and re-purposed.

February had kids making their own Valentine cards and paper creations. The kids even learned how to use a die-cutting machine called an AccuCut to make precise shapes.

March was all about architecture. The Maker Cart was loaded with 500 special blocks called Keva Planks. Keva Planks are a small board shaped block that are lightweight and uniform in size. These features make the blocks a breeze to stack. Each time the Maker Cart made an appearance, kids found creative ways to use every last block.
