This is part of a series of updates about the new YDL library being constructed on North Harris Road in Superior Township. Find more information and updates about the project at ypsilibrary.org/newlibrary.

Superior Building Rendering Front

The Covid-19 Stay Home order closed the library and delayed our project, but the new library is still happening!  If anything, the Covid crisis highlights for us even more the need for a full-service library in Superior Township, as the current facility is too small to allow for adequate social distancing.

Superior Township has engaged OHM Advisors to engineer a widening of Harris Road.  This work was required by the Washtenaw County Road Commission to meet the needs of the new library.

On February 21 our design and engineering team submitted a preliminary site plan to the Superior Township Planning Commission for review.  The Commission did not meet again until June 24, but that evening they approved the site plan.  We are now hard at work on the requirements for final site plan approval.

YDL got the green light from the Township on a proposed property boundary line.  A legal description and easements are being developed, and we hope to have the land transfer complete or nearly complete by the time of final site plan approval.

This fall, O’Neal Construction will work to clear the library site and prepare it for a spring 2021 groundbreaking.

The library staff and architect Dan Whisler from Daniels & Zermack have started to look at finer details, such as exterior building materials, audio-visual requirements for the meeting room, kitchenette appliances, and flooring for the entryway.  This is helping us further develop and refine the budget for the building, which has also been impacted by Covid-19.  It’s very exciting to watch the plans shape up!
