We missed you at our Garden Gathering this week!

This week’s Garden Gathering was a Backyard Jungle activity. If you couldn’t make it this week you can still participate at home!

Remember we have our Garden Gathering events every Friday from 11:00am to 12:00pm at YDL-Whittaker. We’ll post regularly about what’s happening in all the YDL gardens and when Garden Gatherings are cancelled due to rain, check back for supply kits you can use at home.

What is a Backyard Jungle?

Backyard jungle is a STEM activity developed to be an easy way to discover more about what’s in your backyard. For this activity, you’ll take some string and measure out a square foot somewhere on the grass or dirt to explore and write about.

Materials

For this activity you’ll need:

  • String
  • Measuring Tape
  • Scissors
  • Magnifying Glass (optional)
  • Pencil

First pick an area of your lawn that looks interesting to observe. Then, cut your string to be four feet long and create a square in the grass. This is your backyard jungle!

Now you can explore it however you like. If you have a magnifying glass you can take a closer look and see if anything is crawling around on the ground.

Download and view or print the activity below to help guide your exploration. Or visit the Little Bins website for more detailed instructions!
