We missed you at our Garden Gathering this week!

This week’s Garden Gathering was all about making art with the natural world around us. If you couldn’t make it this week you can still participate at home!

Remember we have our Garden Gathering events every Friday from 11:00am to 12:00pm at YDL-Whittaker. We’ll post regularly about what’s happening in all the YDL gardens and when Garden Gatherings are cancelled due to rain, check back for supply kits you can use at home.

Maple Seed Dragonflies

This activity involves gathering, painting, and gluing maple seeds together to make dragonflies.

You will need:

  1. Maple Seeds
  2. Paint
  3. Twigs
  4. Paint Brushes
  5. Hot Glue Gun

Help your kids carefully paint the “wings” whatever colors they like. If you’d like both sides to be painted, wait until they’re dry and flip them over.

After they dry, use the hot glue to attach the smaller maple seed onto the back of the larger one. Position the stems of the maple seeds so they look like antennae.

Cut your twigs down to 3 inches, and glue one onto the back of the combined maple seeds to make the tail. You can paint these as well if you’d like!

Enjoy your dragonfly decorations!

Tip: Tie fishing line to the twigs and hang them from the ceiling to make it look like they’re flying.

Nature Collage

This activity is all about using nature to create a collage.

You will need:

  1. Glue
  2. Tree printout, which is linked below
  3. Natural items gathered from outside

Take your kids around outside, or come to the library to pick from the area around our garden! Gather anything that looks fun; twigs, leave, flowers, grass, or whatever you want to make a colorful collage.

Now, let the kids glue their findings to the tree wherever they see fit.

After it dries, display your collage however you’d like!
