We missed you at our Garden Gathering this week!

This week’s Garden Gathering was about animal habitats and yarn art. If you couldn’t make it this week you can still participate at home! Remember we have our Garden Gathering events every Friday from 11:00am to 12:00pm at YDL-Whittaker. We’ll post regularly about what’s happening in all the YDL gardens and when Garden Gatherings are cancelled due to rain, check back for supply kits you can use at home.

Yarn Sticks

SUPPLIES

For this activity, you’ll be making wrapped stick art.

You’ll need:

  • Sticks in a variety of sizes
  • Different colors and textures of yarn
  • Scissors
  • Glue (Optional)
  • Different colored beads (Optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Look for sticks to wrap! A good stick will be 6 or more inches long and thin enough to easily wrap yarn around.
  2. Cut 2 to 3 feet of string. If you need more, you can tie your old string and new string together and keep wrapping.
  3. Start by tying a knot at the top of the stick really tightly, try to wrap over your old knot to secure it against the stick.
  4. Once you reach the end of your stick, you can go back over it with a different color, or you can tie your yarn off and be done!
  5. Optional: Use glue to secure the knot.
  6. Optional: Thread beads onto your string as you wrap to add some extra decoration!

Your stick can be a wand, or even just a pretty decoration. Try making several wrapped sticks and tying them together at different lengths to make fun decorations.
