Remembering Medal of Honor Recipient Charles Kettles

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Charles Kettles was an Army veteran from Ypsilanti who passed away on January 21, 2019 at the age of 89. Mr. Kettles was a helicopter pilot in the Army during the Vietnam War. In 1967, he led a series of daring rescue missions in his helicopter after American troops were ambushed in South Vietnam. He ultimately saved the lives of over 40 people. For these heroic acts, Mr. Kettles was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2016. In 2006, Mr. Kettles recorded an oral history interview with Bill Vollano as part of the Veterans History Project through …

Free Tax Prep at YDL & Beyond

It is tax season once again, but don’t despair! If you are a local resident with low income, you have many options available for free tax preparation. Local organizations including the AARP Foundation, United Way of Washtenaw County, and the Eastern Michigan University Accounting Society have partnered with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs to help taxpayers receive more of their tax refund. Ann Arbor Housing Voucher applications will be open Nov. 12-16

The Ann Arbor Housing Commission will accept applications for the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) Waiting List from Monday, November 12 through 4pm on Friday, November 16. From these applications, 600 will be randomly selected to obtain a place on Ann Arbor’s Section 8 Waiting List. Of the 600 selected, 300 applications will have at least one household member between the ages of 18-61 with a disability. The other 300 applications will be randomly selected from all other households meeting the preferences listed below. Neighborhood Senior Services supports seniors, age 60 and older, who want to stay in their homes with added support from services and programs. Cost–sharing contributions are requested, but no one is turned away based upon ability to pay. Slime and Similar: Favorite Recipes

Slime has been marketed to kids since the introduction of silly putty in the 1950s. Its unique consistency creates a sensory experience that is hard to duplicate. So it is not a surprise that the library has been making slime and similar concoctions with kids for years, including during an upcoming Library Lab. However, I did find the trend of adults making slime surprising. Slime tutorials were huge on YouTube and Pinterest in 2017. Adults find playing with slime therapeutic.
