The Ypsilanti District Library will have super-charged storytimes downtown this summer, thanks to an initiative funded by the Ann Arbor Rotary Club. The $4,900 grant is is sponsoring YDL’s Reading Together Downtown initiative. Now that YDL-Michigan has reopened, YDL is ramping up important literacy work downtown. On June 17, AT&T will discontinue its email-to-text and text-to-email service. This is part of a larger shift away from SMS text messaging by other providers. We are shifting to a new system for delivering YDL notices via text. However, this means there will be a temporary disruption to YDL text message alerts. The Bookmobile Has New Stops

Since three of our stops have been unattended for some time, we’re breathing new life into those neighborhoods with brand-new ones! Library Social Work program coming to YDL

The Ypsilanti District Library is transforming how patrons can connect with social service resources in the community, thanks to a  generous grant from Washtenaw County Community Mental Health. With funding from the Washtenaw County Mental Health and Public Safety Preservation Millage, YDL will hire a fulltime Library Social Worker. This MSW position will engage with the community at YDL’s three locations to help provide information, support, referrals, and follow-through to people experiencing challenging life circumstances. Play Bigger! Enjoy the new giant dollhouse at YDL-Whittaker

Create new worlds at YDL-Whittaker with the new dollhouse in the Youth Department. The four-story structure is located by the rotating toy area, and stocked with furniture and other items to keep your little ones occupied for hours! The Beal family donated the dollhouse to YDL in 2023, and our Youth Librarian Liz spent a year restoring and resurfacing it to get it ready for action. Grant helps YDL Chess Club Level Up

Get ready for YDL’s own Queen’s Gambit! Over the next year, the Ypsilanti District Library’s Chess Club will have new ways for players to test their mettle—and inspire even more females and those from underrepresented groups to participate—thanks to a $2,000 grant from U.S. Chess Federation (USCF). Now in its third year, the club is a free, drop-in meetup for grades K-12, led by chess expert Jenny Skidmore Smith. The group meets from 4:30-5:30pm on Wednesdays. As part of our catalog integration, MeL requests will shut down as of Monday, October 21. Requesting should come back online in early November. During the outage: Any requests you make before October 21 are still active in the system and will still arrive and be processed. This is our large meeting room. It is used for library programs such as the summer lunch program, computer classes, storytimes, teen advisory group, and homework help. It is also reservable for free by members of the community for non-commercial educational events. Bird-friendly Glass

You may have noticed the dots on the windows. All of the glass at the new Superior building is bird-friendly. The dots are spaced closely enough so they interrupt any reflection that the bird may see, which prevents birds from flying into the windows. The kids’ area offers 6 computers, 2 iPads, a much larger book collection, and interactive play areas for little ones. Activities such as art stations and scavenger hunts change so that there’s always something new for kids who visit the library. Thanks to a major gift from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation, we are in the process of enhancing early literacy with interactive toys and elements. This patio area hosts many outdoor programs during the warmer months. Local artist Yen Azzaro led a a community-sourced ground mural to decorate the patio, which was funded with grants from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council and Ann Arbor Kiwanis.  Past the patio, we built accessible raised bed gardens. These are used for library programs centered on gardening and growing food. These were provided by a grant from the Ann Arbor Farm and Garden Club. Drive-Up Book Return

Look down the hallway. At the end of the entrance hallway is the door to our book return room. The drive-up book return was a service added by popular demand, made possible by our generous donors. This is the only YDL location to offer this service. This allows people to return items without getting out of their vehicles. Power pedestals outside the front door and on the youth patio allow people to charge devices and use the library’s wireless. Censorship is the suppression of ideas or information because a particular person or group of people does not like the idea in question.
